I played with it last weekend as I was skimming through the new features. I don't recall that bones were involved at all. I deformed a primitive sphere quite nicely, no bones about it! <-- (sick pun). The only thing I had trouble with was that I found I had to select both the deform tool and the object I wanted to deform (despite having the axis of the deform tool surrounding the sphere), which wasn't mentioned in the manual. Looking back, I guess it's obvious.
